Here’s a picture of one of our “Prairie Schooners.” These
are warm season shelters for our hens shaped much like the old pioneer wagons. The birds in the picture are 10 week old pullets (immature
hens). They are the Rhode Island Red breed. They will start laying eggs at about 22 weeks of age. The young birds in the picture are
grazing grasses and clover. They also love to hunt bugs and worms.

Our hens get about half their feed from pasture grazing. We also feed them a healthy
ration of corn, roasted soybeans and other natural grains. The green materials that our hens get in their diet from pasture grazing generates healthier eggs
with more Omega-3, Vitamin E, Beta Carotene, and lower overall Cholesterol than the regular supermarket eggs. Our eggs also have a richer, better-tasting flavor.

This is another shelter type that we have used. This is an "Eggmobile," an invention by our
hero-farmer, Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm. I
think chickens like to be outside instead of in a building
or a cage. What do you think?

Meet Bill and Bruce. They're a pair of Percheron draft horses. They move all our Prairie Schooners. Bill is a little
bit ornery at times, but he is also the strongest and hardest worker. The chickens love to see Bill and Bruce coming because that means it's time to move to a new, fresh pasture.
